Description

Come enjoy a Capoeira Angola performance that showcases this deep cultural art. Capoeira Angola combines elements from dance, martial arts, acrobatics, ritual, and music. It is a game where a “Capoeirista” uses dance movements, agility, and technique to maneuver a fellow player into a defenseless position in a playful manner. Players can only place their hands, head, and feet on the floor, and there is no contact from strikes. The strikes and evasions are woven together with acrobatics and dance, which makes Capoeira Angola fluid and beautiful to watch. Enjoy unique music, dance, and acrobatic movements that you have likely never seen! Following the performance, we will guide participants in a fun and interactive movement session that teaches stepping in rhythm and learning the basic footwork of Capoeira Angola. You will also get to have a hands-on music experience!

Professor Avi

Avi Henn has been dedicated to practicing and learning the art of Capoeira for over 17 years. He is a student and teacher of the whole art of Capoeira Angola including movement, music, dance, history, and philosophy. Avi started teaching Capoeira 10 years ago when he founded the Capoeira Amizade group here in Flagstaff Arizona. In January 2015 Avi was recognized as a “Professor” of Capoeira Angola under the mentorship of Mestres Cabello of Serra Grande Bahia Brazil. Avi is versed in teaching methods through the study of Capoeira Angola, but also due to his background in coaching basketball, being an instructor at the Israeli military, and his academic background that includes teaching undergraduate and graduate level classes at Northern Arizona University.

In his classes, Avi emphasizes healthy body mechanics, movement competency, music, and the rituals of Capoeira Angola. He also regards and explores Capoeira Angola as a tool for self-awareness, enrichment and empowerment. Professor Avi seeks to increase awareness of Capoeira Angola in Arizona and the United States. He believes that Capoeira Angola is one of the best tools for modern people to maintain a connection to basic human needs such as movement, music, ritual, and community.
