I come from a persevering matriarchal lineage. Coming from a family where woman are appreciated and nurtured enabled me to grow into a woman who sees the world with such beauty and hope. Matriarchal lineages create a society of peaceful and prosperous individuals. My mom always said her grandmother told her to respect herself and always know her self worth. She instills this in me. Therefore I always remember to love myself and care for my hearts desires.
Today, Navajo women still honor important Matriarchal values such as honoring the clan ship system, having traditional ceremonies and creating new ways to communicate with our language. It’s a different world today than it was even decades ago for not only Diné women but women of all ethnicities and cultures. Women should always be celebrated for their strength, natural nurturing abilities and constant fierceness as mothers. My sister has two sons and she has several degrees. She is the epitome for a strong modern Diné woman. I’d like this piece to commemorate the idea that Matriarchs are still here and will always be here. May they live on.
I’m Crystal Lynn Dugi from Tonalea, Arizona. I am a Diné woman. My traditional Diné (Navajo) clans are Whitecorn Zuni Edgewater people, Manygoats people, Reed people and Rock Gap people. I am a full time artist. I enjoy drawing, doing tarot cards and spending time with my dogs.
I started painting to cope with anxiety stemming from a Bipolar Diagnosis. I love it because it gives me a chance to be in charge of my world and my emotions. All in all art is my heart.
