I am continually fascinated with the idea of dichotomy and the questions that such an idea can facilitate. Can something not represent both sides of a dichotomy? Is this unique to human perception? In my work Peaking Through Change, I seek to explore the dichotomy of natural preservation versus the growth of a society and where perception falls amid this spectrum. What we perceive as human beings is determined by our own set of predispositions. Do we bear fondness for the untouched? Do we thrive amidst the bustle of objects created by own hands? Does tactile experience influence our moods and the way that we perceive our surroundings? There is beauty in the experience of both pristine natural environments and thriving urban experiences as well as the transition between the two. I believe in making the unnoticeable a present and conscious experience. Therefore, I want the involvement of my work to be an interactive assimilation into this dichotomy, where the viewer becomes distinctly aware of how the spectrum delineates each individual’s perspective between natural preservation and societal growth.
Mac Barnes is an oil painter, muralist, and digital artist from Flagstaff, AZ. She currently owns and operates her own commission art business; Maccentuated, and flips furniture in addition to accepting commissions. She received a Tanner Fellowship grant for a portraiture series from St. Lawrence University where she graduated with an Art and Art History and Business double major and Creative Writing minor in 2020. Her work has been published in the Underground magazine and the St. Lawrence University magazine respectively. More recently, she created a stage front bricolage for Spotlab and the June Jam Music Festival in 2022.
